Injuries abroad and claims

Visiting new places can be fun. No matter where you go, if it’s somewhere new, you’re bound to find something you like about that destination. My hubby and I love travelling, especially when it’s with the kids. However, it’s not without its flaws, especially as there’s always the risk of being injured in accidents.

Getting injured abroad can pose a number of problems, perhaps the main one being who has responsibility for your health and safety. When you go on holiday, you have to deal with tour operators, hotel owners, restaurant owners and airlines. Wherever you are, the company providing accommodation, your flights or food are meant to guarantee that you’re in a safe, secure environment where you’re not at risk from being ill or injured.

My kids being kids.

I remember when I travelled to Asia with my family to escape the harsh European winter. We had experienced delays with our connecting flight, meaning we had to spend 13 hours in a warm city. Although the airline paid for accommodation, it was still inconvenient for us, as we then had to fly to a different destination from there, which took longer than expected. Unfortunately, while we were trying to get to our preferred destination, one of the kids got sick, which was distressing to say the least.

In a scenario like this, it’s possible to make a compensation claim against the responsible party. It’s possible to file personal injury claims which can help to cover any costs you face after injuries or illnesses picked up while on holiday. Companies such as First4lawyers can help you make that claim, which can help to pay medical costs and cover any income lost if you had to take time off work to recover.

The main purpose of going on holiday is to have fun, but having an accident can quickly ruin a vacation. This is why, if you can’t get travel insurance, it’s important to know what to do should you suffer as the result of such an incident.

  1. A very informative post you got here, and yes, it is something that all travelers must be aware about. I remember back when we took a trip to Australia when I was still in high school, my brother ended up getting chicken pox there a few weeks before we were supposed to go home. Just like you, my parents were not really sure of what to do or how to handle the situation. It was only years later when I started working for a travel firm that I heard about things like travel insurance and all those stuff.

No matter how much we’d like our trips to be smooth sailing, unfortunate things can still happen, and it is important that we should know what to do, who to approach, and have some type of coverage for that. Getting some travel insurance and international health coverage can definitely be a bit more expensive, but it is definitely worth being safe than sorry.

  2. This is something frequent travelers should always keep in mind. Traveling is fun, but in the event of unexpected circumstances, it is imperative that travelers know what they should know.

  3. I remember when my dad was still an OFW, he once needed a hospital/medications assistance from our government. And during that time, he was lucky to get all what he needed. Nowadays, am not sure if our OFWs are fully aware of the things that they have to keep in mind specially in other countries. I hope the DFA and OWWA or the other agencies will have more time to brief our OFWs about this.

  4. it never come to my mind any accident while travelling but just in case, I’ll keep in mind what you have posted

  5. You’ll never know what could happen during your vacation, so you should definitely be prepared. It’s good that there are companies who take care of that. That gives us one less thing to worry about :)

  6. This is one big worry of hubby especially when he visited Philippines before. Good thing he got everything covered from insurance to AirMedevac. He lost his luggage-ful of pasalubong one time but PAL located it and delivered it to our hotel…:-)

  7. For legal cases, it is always a good idea to consult the experts.

  8. Thanks for the info and reminder. We always make sure that we have travel insurance issued before we travel just to be in the safe side. We don’t want to be stuck in a foreign land and not knowing what to do should an emergency arise. So better be prepared. It’s just few amount of money added to the cost of travel but at least you can heave a sigh of relief knowing that you are well-covered.
